Contributor: Samantha Maresh,

We have been getting a lot of secondary insurances not pay Medicare's deductible or coinsurance. I am wondering if that is because they see the negative payment from Medicare? How do we get past this? Any tips and tricks from anyone is greatly appreciated as I have tried to research this and cannot find a good answer

Actually several supplemental plans do not cover the deductible; that's how they keep the premiums affordable for the client/patient. We're in WV and bill to Novitas, and typically do not have any issues.

Many supplements don't pay the annual Medicare deductible.

Effective for individuals newly enrolling in Medicare as of January 1, 2020, Medicare supplemental policies can no longer cover the Part B deductible.  Individuals enrolled in Medicare prior to this date with a supplemental policy that covered the deductible can maintain that policy but if they switch plans after January 1, 2020, they will be unable to buy a new supplemental policy that covers the deductible.  This change was mandated as part of the The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 but the effective date was postponed until January 1, 2020.  Hope this is helpful.

Is anyone having an issue with patients that have a Medicare Advantage Plan such as United Health Care Dual Plan and the secondary of United Health Care Medicaid not paying the deductible? Do we just adjust this off?

As of now, we're not having issues...I would try billing again or calling them. If still won't pay, and patient is eligible for the Medicaid, you'll have to adjust Hope this helps
