I became office supervisor in a RHC this past August. There are three providers here and one mainly does acupuncture. Prior to coming here I had not heard of rural health and acupuncture being in the same facility. Just want to make sure we are up to code and is there anything specifically I need to be doing or looking for?

You are correct that acupuncture would be a non-RHC service unless it for the few limited services allowed by Medciare for lumbar pain.  Refer to the CMS NCD/LCD for which procedures and diagnosis codes are covered.

Hi.  We do acupuncture in our RHC and it is for low back pain and it is not being covered as an RHC visit.  Would you know what revenue code this should go under?  We have tried 521 on a 711 bill type and this is not accepted by Medicare as payable.

Hello,

We are an RHC in California and we do Acupuncture here a few times a month. However, it’s not a covered benefit for Medicare….so we only schedule Medicaid patients with him as it is covered by California Medicaid (Medi-Cal). For those patients, I am not aware of any issues with reimbursement.
