If you have a provider-based rural health clinic does it have to be on the same EMR has the hospital?

We are a provider based RHC that is not on the same system as the CAH we are attached to. We just make sure that any documents that are necessary for continuity of care are available to all staff or are in the clinic system. Hope this helps.

If the RHC and hospital are not on the same systems, the records must be retrievable and/or cross-referenced. This is a requirement of 42 CFR 413.65 which is the provider-based status regulation. It is not a certification requirement but it does demonstrate that there is the appropriate provider-based relationship. It's usually not a problem for the RHC providers to have access to the hospital EHR but it is a challenge sometimes for the hospital to have access to the RHC EHR. It's also a good idea to have a policy on how the records are retrieved when needed.
